Maurer Rose SVG turns a smooth polar flower into a precise chord walk, but the familiar lace can hide repeated cycles and undocumented choices. This tutorial derives the modular route, audits one n=6,d=71 edition, and exports an accessible vector recipe you can reproduce.

Maurer Rose SVG has two geometries

A rhodonea rose is a continuous polar curve, commonly written r = sin(nθ). A Maurer construction visits selected points on that curve and joins consecutive samples with straight chords. The flower and the walk share points, but they are not the same geometry. Good Maurer Rose SVG work makes that distinction visible instead of presenting a lace-like result as an unexplained preset.

The canonical convention takes 360 steps. At step k, the angular stop is advanced by an integer d degrees before the rose equation supplies a radius. Connecting the resulting points creates the familiar modular chord pattern. The value of n shapes the underlying rose; d determines the visiting order. Crop, scale, stroke, palette, and hierarchy remain editorial decisions.

A useful Maurer rose generator should therefore expose both the smooth rose curve SVG and the sampled walk rather than hiding their difference behind one render button.

Peter M. Maurer's original note, “A Rose is a Rose…”, is the primary attribution for the 360-line construction. Preserve that definition when labeling a canonical edition. A shorter primitive walk can be useful for analysis or plotting, but it is a disclosed deduplication when the canonical traversal repeats.

This tutorial treats the recipe as an edition contract: formula, cycle, precision, mode, style, accessibility text, and hashes travel together. If you enjoy oscillator-led harmonograph posters, the contrast is useful: a damped time trace and a modular polar walk may look related while their generating rules are fundamentally different.

Compute each polar stop exactly

For step k, compute θₖ = k·d·π/180, then rₖ = sin(n·θₖ). Cartesian coordinates are x = r cos θ and mathematical y = r sin θ. Negative radius is not invalid: it places the point in the opposite direction on the same radial line. Taking an absolute value silently changes the artwork.

SVG's y-axis points down, so presentation applies one y flip. Keep mathematical points untouched for geometry metrics, then map them with a single negative-y transform or coordinate conversion. Flipping during calculation and again in the group transform cancels the intended orientation. The receipt should name where that presentation boundary lives.

Generate the unsnapped final point and measure its Euclidean distance from the first point. That seam records floating-point closure error. Snap only the exported endpoint to the first point after metrics are complete. If you calculate length or bounds from the snapped list, you conceal the numerical behavior the receipt promises to expose.

For standalone output, use a stable viewBox and a path or polyline whose coordinates are formatted at declared precision. The SVG 2 path specification explains path data and close-path behavior; a Z command is not a substitute for documenting which sample points the construction used. Maurer Rose SVG should remain reconstructible from numbers, not merely visible as pixels.

Reduce the modular cycle before drawing

The visiting order advances around 360 angular residues by d. Its primitive cycle length is 360 / gcd(360,d); the canonical repeat multiplicity is gcd(360,d). This arithmetic tells you whether 360 canonical chords contain one complete traversal or many repetitions of a shorter walk.

For d=71, the greatest common divisor is one. The primitive cycle is 360 and the repeat multiplicity is one. Canonical and primitive modes therefore describe the same 360 chords, with 361 points when the endpoint is included. For d=60, the gcd is 60, the primitive cycle is six, and the canonical walk traces those six chords 60 times.

Both exports can be legitimate when they are labeled. Canonical mode preserves the historic 360-chord construction even when geometry repeats. Primitive mode removes repeated traversal and emits steps zero through the primitive cycle. Calling the primitive output “the canonical 360-line rose” would rewrite the definition; drawing 360 identical cycles without disclosing repetition would hide an important property.

Cycle reduction is also a creative signal. Dense repetition can deepen a stroke or overwhelm a plotter, while a primitive export reveals the underlying polygon. A Maurer rose generator should show gcd, primitive length, and multiplicity before rendering. This modular discipline also appears in Lissajous letterforms, where frequency relationships shape closure and visual rhythm.

Work the n=6, d=71 edition

The editorial preset uses n=6 and d=71 in canonical mode. Because gcd(360,71)=1, it contains 361 points and 360 chords with no repeated modular cycle. The sampled bounds are approximately ±0.965926 radius units. The unsnapped seam is 9.012905257215e-14, small but intentionally retained in the receipt before export snapping.

Summing the 360 chord distances gives path length 335.134395 radius units. Sorted chord lengths have minimum 0.887049, median 0.931439, and maximum 0.973809. These values describe the sampled polyline, not the smooth rose and not a physical stroke after scaling, joins, or machine calibration.

The collapsed witness n=5,d=60 has a six-step primitive cycle repeated 60 times by the canonical convention. Its primitive path length is 5.196152; all six primitive chords have length 0.866025; its unsnapped seam is 1.224646799147e-15. The contrast preset n=5,d=59 returns to a 360-step cycle, path length 318.140390, and chord min/median/max 0.830823/0.884486/0.935096.

These three fixtures make Maurer Rose SVG auditable. One is the chosen dense edition, one exposes repetition, and one shows how a one-degree step change alters the chord field. Exact inputs create a better conversation about authorship than an infinite slider with no saved state.

Art-direct a contact sheet, not an infinite slider

A parameter browser is useful for discovery, but it is not the artwork. Freeze a small contact sheet and write down why each candidate survives or fails. For the 6/71 edition, the long, even chords form a cobalt lattice with enough breathing room for coral step markers. A slightly tight crop makes the crossings feel architectural without clipping the outer petals.

The 5/60 primitive witness is valuable as an explanatory card because its six-step cycle is legible. As a main poster, it may be too sparse unless the stroke, negative space, or repeated canonical overprint is intentionally developed. The 5/59 contrast is denser and more rotationally restless; it can work as a secondary edition but competes with the clearer thesis of the selected 6/71 field.

Choose palette and stroke after inspecting density. A light warm ground lets a dark cobalt line remain readable; coral markers should differ by shape and labels as well as hue. Test crop marks, caption, and metadata at final scale. Generative line art still needs hierarchy, not a color dropdown.

The disciplined contact-sheet method connects this work to guilloché SVG patterns and other parametric practices: preserve enough candidates to show judgment, then publish one declared recipe. Maurer Rose SVG becomes authored when the receipt includes rejection notes, not when the number of available presets becomes infinite.

Audit crossings, tiny chords, and closure

A crossing count needs an explicit rule. This lab counts strict proper intersections between nonadjacent line segments. It excludes shared endpoints, adjacent segments, and collinear contact, and uses a declared epsilon for orientation tests. The result is a sampled-polyline diagnostic, not a topological proof about the continuous rose.

Intersection work grows quadratically, so bound it before allocating or comparing pairs. With at most 360 canonical chords, exhaustive checking is manageable; generalized exports need an explicit work cap. Keep the first and final segments' adjacency in mind when the path closes. Otherwise the seam is miscounted as a crossing.

Chord statistics expose a different production risk. Very short segments can darken, burn, or chatter in physical output; very long ones can dominate the composition. Minimum, median, maximum, duplicate consecutive points, total length, and unsnapped seam together provide a useful screen audit. They do not certify pen speed, paper behavior, laser dwell, or join appearance.

Closure is similarly layered. Modular residue closure says the visit returns after a known number of steps. Floating-point closure measures how close the computed endpoint came to the first. Export closure snaps or closes the visible path. Keep all three concepts named. The practice parallels hypotrochoid SVG posters, where symbolic period, sampling, and physical proof are separate checks. Maurer Rose SVG is strongest when it shows every seam.

Export accessible standalone Maurer Rose SVG

A standalone file should open without the lab. Include a viewBox, a descriptive <title>, a <desc>, and an explicit role or accessible-name relationship. The description should name n, d, mode, chord count, palette, and the fact that the image is a modular walk on a rose curve. Decorative crop marks can be hidden from the accessibility tree.

Non-text content needs an equivalent purpose, not a transcription of every coordinate. WCAG 2.2 Non-text Content grounds that requirement. On the article page, a visible table should repeat the decisive numerical claims so the graphic never becomes the only carrier of meaning. Patterns, markers, and direct labels protect the same conclusions when color is unavailable.

Export coordinates at a declared precision and derive hashes from the normalized point list, path data, and style contract. The JSON receipt should include formula version, inputs, gcd, cycle, repetition, point/chord counts, bounds, length statistics, seam before snap, intersection rule, hashes, limitations, and receipt hash. Same input in the same engine should be deterministic.

Do not accept arbitrary markup, CSS, filenames, or palettes from input. Fixed palette IDs and bounded numbers keep the file local and safe. A Maurer Rose SVG export is a small publishing package: image, semantic description, and reproducible recipe should agree exactly.

Publish the edition receipt

The final caption can be concise: this n=6,d=71 canonical edition walks 360 unique angular residues, measures 335.134395 radius units of chord path, and snaps only the exported endpoint after recording its numerical seam. Those facts explain the form without pretending that mathematics made the artistic decisions.

Archive the receipt with the SVG and social crop. Record why 5/60 was kept as the repetition witness and why 5/59 remained a contrast rather than the lead. If a physical edition is produced later, add machine, scale, material, speed, and observed failures as a new production record instead of retroactively claiming this screen audit covered them.

Revisit by 2027-02-04, or sooner if SVG or accessibility guidance changes, cross-engine fixture output drifts, physical-output findings change the cautions, a source fails, or readers need generalized modular walks. Refresh the date only when the article or artifact actually changes.

Maurer Rose SVG is compelling because a strict modular system still leaves room for taste. The formula determines available structure; the contact sheet, crop, stroke, palette, labels, and rejection notes turn that structure into an edition. Publish both layers and the work can be admired, inspected, and recreated without confusing a parameter value with authorship.

Runnable local artifact — The lab reports sampled numerical geometry and same-engine determinism; it does not prove physical plotter safety or cross-engine byte identity.
